Unconventional times.

A lot has happened since Tom, Amandla and I took this picture at the Democratic National Convention in Denver twelve years ago! I thought about that heady, soul-stirring experience while watching DNC 2020's opening night coverage. Michelle Obama's widely lauded speech  framed life in America today in a bold, truth-searing fashion. She made it quite clear: We've got to vote as if our very life depends on it. Because it does. Ecstatic, I boarded the metaphorical Love Train with the Agape International Choir to sing with John Legend. I have a vivid memory of looking out from the stage during rehearsal and seeing John's girlfriend, now wife, Chrissy Teigen playing with her tresses as she watched from the floor. I recall passing by a smiling Caroline Kennedy as the choir entered the  arena, radiant in our intention and brightly colored tees. ​

I also remember the sensations I felt at the end of this spectacular day—riding back to the hotel in the dark, knowing that we and the country were embracing the light of a new day in America.
